I took this at Portage Lakes State Park. I don't think it's the most fabulous shot, but I liked many of the components of it. I liked the newly frozen water along with the fresh snow. I liked the way the sunlight cast shadows through some of the trees. Unfortunately I had to crop down because I saw what looks like a cigarette butt in the photo and it was distracting. Always look for litter in your photos! It was a quiet and calm environment, and that's how looking at this photo makes me feel.
Sometimes the coolest photo of the day happens by mistake. This ball was in the window of a shop in downtown Willoughby. There were halogen lights above the balls almost making them glow. After I took the first shot through the window, I noticed that the ball was reflecting the street scene - and me. :) What do you see in your crystal ball for 2016?
This horse's name is Uno, and he lives at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT. I took this photo on a trip to see my sister, and we all went and volunteered for a few days. I chose this photo to represent the best of 2015 for a few reasons. I really enjoyed the trip overall - I got to spend time with my husband and my sister, and we got to spend time at Best Friends which is an amazing place. It was relaxing and rejuvenating. And I took more photos there than I could count... :)
I'm quite fond of Star Trek, so when I thought of a scale model I thought of the infamous Enterprise. This is actually the model that contains the disc with the movie inside.

I like this one because the shallow depth of field (aka lack of focus) makes it look like the ship might be in motion, and it also has that moody feel from the recent Trek movies.
One of the lights in our house that comes on every night is our willow light. It casts a warm glow in the corner of the living room. Who needs a Christmas Tree?

It's also a reminder of a dear friend that passed away several years ago. He had this very light in his house, and it reminds me of all the good times we spent at his place in his living room watching movies and talking the night away.
One of the many photos I took of Alpacas during our visit with my sister at 2 Point Farm. This lady was peeking at me under the fence, and I think she's smiling. Thought it was a cool pic with the detail on the nose and the warm colors of the sky in the background.
I thought this was an interesting pick for the "Skyline" topic. This is one of my preferred skylines, and I liked how the clouds blended the sky with the mountaintop.

Taken from the Ogden Nature Center in Ogden, UT. Seems fitting that my last post was of the same mountain range, but this time I had the Nikon with me. This was cropped a bit and brought out the shadows a little to combat the haze.
This photo was taken while on vacation in the Finger Lakes on the east bank of Seneca Lake. No, it's not a real bird but I thought it added some interest to the already amazing colors of the sunset. Spring has begun on Clingman's Dome 6643ft above sea level in the Great Smoky Mountains. The road was only open yesterday - closed again due to snow/ice. So a part of springtime at Clingman's is the ice melting which it was doing all over. There are small bluffs that are covered in ice. Some parts have icicles and in other places it just looks like miniature glaciers.

This photo was taken about 330ft below the peak where the sun had initiated a mass ice melt. Took several shots to get the drip. I think the drip itself could be more in focus, but I liked the photo overall.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07125734520362898203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704975112043717927.post-12006156539447185842013-02-17T17:42:00.001-05:002013-02-17T17:50:39.373-05:00Ice Woman

The course talks about off-camera flash which I didn't have with me when I took the pictures below, but I did have a chance to play around with the on-camera flash and settings to see what I could get out of it.

I think there are plenty of times where the on-camera flash makes a picture look ... flat or like a 35mm disposable took it. But I think there are also many situations in which the on-camera flash can save a photo.

Take for instance the following two photos:

Now neither of these photos is a perfect photo by any means, and I'm sure a little 'shopping might help. But the main point is the little bit of flash that enabled me to get more of the cactus on the left side of the photo. Instead of the flash I could have increased my exposure, but I might have lost more of the detail or colors from the blurred background. I'm not happy with the way the flash looks on the little blooms or the loss of the interesting shadows; however, those can be fixed. The point here is just that I learned I can get better detail and balance sometimes with just a little flash.

Something else that I learned:

Both of these photos use on-camera flash, but in the left one there is a pronounced shadow that detracts from the image. It makes the light look harsh and distracting. I think that while not a prize winner, the photo on the right looks much better because of one simple thing - I flipped the camera over. Instead of the light coming from the right, the flash shot from the left, combined with the natural light, and filled in the shadow.

Remember, I am not a professional or advanced photographer so take what I say for what it's worth. But just thought I'd share with you what I learned from a few trials and many errors.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07125734520362898203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2704975112043717927.post-73823362361797910012013-02-03T15:31:00.001-05:002013-02-03T15:31:51.873-05:00The face of the orchid

Here is another shot from the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. I think this one might be a Giant Owl moth. Of course it's another macro, but I liked how the sunlight was backlighting the wings. This guy sat still for quite awhile letting me take several pictures.

Some things I learned from this photo:

1. Keep shooting. I took a few good shots and ones that I liked, but I kept taking pictures anyway. Each time I would tweak it just a little or the moth would move its wings a different way. Finally the composition came together when the light back lit the wings. At that point I was already taking the shot I wanted in terms of composition. At that point, it was just everything that came together.

2. Sometimes you take 20 shots to get one good one - and that's ok. I'm not a professional, and I certainly don't claim otherwise. I'm learning and will in all certainty always be learning. I learned something from each of those shots if only what I didn't want to do again. Don't beat yourself up for the myriad of lousy shots you take getting to the good one.

3. Some moths like to pose, some do not. Many would just fly away as I got closer. This one, however, was ready for a close up. And he (or she) let me get right up there.
