Here Bully Bully

(Nikon D5100, f/6.3, 1/250, ISO400)
Taken at the Weber County Fair in Ogden, UT.  The bull had already flung the rider and now was chasing the guy who was supposed to get the bull away from the rider. (I think)  I could have probably used a higher shutter speed to freeze the action a little better.  But I like the shot anyway so here it is.

The title, by the way, is what the guy had written on the back of his red shirt.

And this is what happened shortly after the first photo.  Everyone was alright.

Seneca Lake Sunset

This photo was taken while on vacation in the Finger Lakes on the east bank of Seneca Lake.  No, it's not a real bird but I thought it added some interest to the already amazing colors of the sunset.  I haven't edited this photo - right out of the camera. (Nikon D5100, 1/400, f/5.6, ISO100)

Photo Friday: Clingman's Spring

(Nikon D5100, f/5.6, 1/400sec)

Spring has begun on Clingman's Dome 6643ft above sea level in the Great Smoky Mountains.  The road was only open yesterday - closed again due to snow/ice.  So a part of springtime at Clingman's is the ice melting which it was doing all over.  There are small bluffs that are covered in ice.  Some parts have icicles and in other places it just looks like miniature glaciers.

This photo was taken about 330ft below the peak where the sun had initiated a mass ice melt.  Took several shots to get the drip.  I think the drip itself could be more in focus, but I liked the photo overall.

Ice Woman

From the Medina Ice Festival 2013.  I think it was 22 degrees and my fingers were starting to freeze when I took this shot.  It's not as sharp as I would have liked..  I think it kinda looks like an alien from this view, but I think it was some sort of angel.

Flash me!

I've been working through an online photography class, and one of the topics covered is about using flash.  The course talks about off-camera flash which I didn't have with me when I took the pictures below, but I did have a chance to play around with the on-camera flash and settings to see what I could get out of it.

I think there are plenty of times where the on-camera flash makes a picture look ... flat or like a 35mm disposable took it.  But I think there are also many situations in which the on-camera flash can save a photo.

The face of the orchid

Funny where you can see faces.  This was one of the orchids on display at the
Franklin Conservatory in Columbus, OH.
